Avoid Christmas accidents!

December 11, 2012

During Christmas, most homes are packed with family and friends and, in the excitement, accidents await around every corner. Each year, hospital staff treats people for injuries such as falls, cuts and shocks. Almost all accidents are related to the holiday lighting, decorations and Christmas trees.

A couple of safety checks & tips to avoid accidents and make your Christmas a pleasant one;

–        Check if outdoor lighting is actually certified for outdoor use

–        Check if the lighting was tested by a recognized testing laboratory and meets safety standards

–        Check each set of lights on damaged sockets and wiring

–        Replace burned-out bulbs with bulbs of the same wattage

–        Turn off all holiday lighting when going to sleep

–        Check box or label if the artificial Christmas tree is fire-resistant

–        Never use lit candles in a tree or near other evergreens

–        Avoid decoration that is sharp or breakable, especially when children with children around

–        Only use flame retardant decorations to trim a tree

–        Do not place the tree near a fireplace or radiator

–        Check if the plants you buy are toxic. Mistletoe for instance is toxic. If you buy toxic plants do make sure children can´t reach them.

–        Do not over-reach yourself when standing on a ladder

Be safe and stay safe! Do take our tips into account, it can´t hurt to be prepared. Our Jet Rescue crew wishes you a merry Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23, 2012

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated. Now where did Thanksgiving come from? Why do we celebrate it? Let us explain.

In the mid 1600´s, a large number of people sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to land and settle in a place called Plymouth (America). The first winter they had to survive was extremely cold and the crops they had planted failed in the new climate and unfamiliar soil. As a result of this winter more than half of the people died due to the lack of food.

The few people who survived were saved as Native Americans taught them how to grow corn and other crops, all of which were new food for the settlers. In the next autumn, bountiful crops of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins were harvested. The settlers had much to be thankful for, so a feast was organized. A feast not only for showing gratitude for a good harvest but also to thank the Native Americans for teaching them how to grow and cook these new types of food. This feast is now known as Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving has now has turned into a day to feast with loved ones and to give thanks for the many blessings we have received. As many people share this time with family and friends, thanksgiving is amongst the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year. During the 6-day Thanksgiving travel period, the number of long-distance trips increases by a staggering 54 percent!

At Jet Rescue we give you the following travel tips to avoid a “turbulent” trip;

–        Avoid heavy travel days (weekends)

–        Build in extra time to reduce stress

–        Book plane tickets well in advance

We hope your trip will be as a smooth as can be and you will arrive safe at your friends of family´s houses. In the event of you needing to reach us, we are only a phone call away. Our  flight coordination team is available24/7, 365 days a year. Jet Rescue wishes you and your loved ones a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy!

Jet Rescue supports World Aids Day!

November 22, 2012

World Aids DayAt Jet Rescue we would like to ask your attention for the upcoming “World AIDS Day”, observed on the 1st of December.  Every year the 1st of December is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. Public support and programming is encouraged to prevent the spread of HIV infection; awareness and education about HIV/AIDS is provided and compassion is demonstrated for those infected or affected by HIV.

Government and health officials observe the day, often with speeches or forums on the AIDS topics and since 1995, the President of the United States has made an official proclamation on World AIDS Day. Governments of other nations have followed suit and issued similar announcements.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, and approximately 33 million people are infected by HIV.

Declining new HIV infections in children
The area where most progress is being made is in the reduction of new HIV infections in children. Half of the global reductions in new HIV infections in the last two years have been among newborn children.

Fewer AIDS-related deaths
Antiretroviral therapy has emerged as a powerful force for saving lives. In the last 24 months the number of people accessing treatment has increased by 63% globally.

More investments
Countries are increasing investments in the AIDS response despite a difficult economic climate. The global gap in resources needed annually by 2015 is now at 30%. In 2011, US$ 16.8 billion was available and the need for 2015 is between US$ 22-24 billion.

Statistically the results are improving but we still are far from being there yet. Please do support this cause and make your colleagues, friends and family aware of this important day. Thank you!

Air Ambulance Crash update

December 9, 2011

Late November, a twin-engine Piper Navajo used for air ambulance service crashed, killing three people including the patient and his wife. The aircraft was transporting the patient and his wife from West Palm Beach, Fla. to Chicago and went down in a wooded area just five miles  of the airport in Riverwoods. Tower recordings shows fuel concerns before plane crash. The aircraft ran out of fuel.

We are deeply saddened to hear of this tragedy and our hearts and thoughts go out to the victims’ loved ones. We wish a full and fast recovery to the accident’s two survivors.

Increasing Awareness to Maximize Safety

This air ambulance fatality is a devastating reminder to take a closer look at safety in air ambulance transport. We cannot change the outcome of  this tragedy, but we can arm you with information that will help you to make the best and safest decision in choosing an air ambulance provider.

The fact is, arranging a medical flight is not something most people do every day; it’s probably not something most people will do in their lifetimes. But it is what we do every day, and we want to ensure that you understand the requirements for a safe, successful medical flight.

Here are some things you should expect in an air ambulance provider:

Well-maintained, medically-dedicated aircraft

Some operators own their aircraft; some have exclusive leases with reputable providers; and some “companies” are actually brokers who broker out flights to the cheapest provider so that they can make the most profit. These distinctions can affect safety and quality of service.

When providers operate their own aircraft or have exclusive operating agreements, they know exactly which aircraft patients are flying on, including condition, maintenance history and safety features. When brokers are choosing operators based on price, there is more likelihood that corners are being cut somewhere along the line. (In this industry, be aware that the best price may not always be the safest decision.)

Ask the following questions:

  • Do you own aircraft yourself or have exclusive use arrangements with specific providers?
  • What type of aircraft will my loved one be transported on?
  • What safety features does the aircraft offer?

Jet Rescue Air Ambulance has an operation agreement in place for the operation of its medically-dedicated Learjets 35s.  We get involved on who’s maintaining the jets, who’s flying them and what condition they’re in. The jets are outfitted with advanced avionic equipment including GPS navigation,Color weather radar, and the latest in collision and terrain avoidance systems (EGPWS, TCAS/TCAS-II, TAWS, etc.).

Each fully customized medical jet is equipped with a self-contained Lifeport  stretcher, critical care equipment, medications, and the latest technology in medical devices and monitoring capability; they are flying intensive care units .

Highest FAA rating ATP (Airline Transport  Pilot) with extensive worldwide flight experience.

Who operates the aircraft is just as vital to safety as the aircraft itself. Ask if the air ambulance provider employs their pilots. Inquire into how many pilots will be operating the aircraft. Find out about the pilots’ credentials and experience.

The flight crew members  that fly on our Learjets have thousands of hours in the air including significant experience in Learjets. Two pilots are in the cockpit on every flight. All pilots have completed simulator training in the aircraft, and have fulfilled or exceeded all FAA requirements.

Experienced, compassionate medical crews prepared for any situation

It is not an uncommon air ambulance industry practice for medical flight crews to have full-time jobs and moonlight as flight nurses/paramedics. This poses a safety concern as medics/nurses often go straight from a hospital shift to the aircraft to care for patients, pushing the limits of mental and physical fatigue.

Ask the air medical transport company these questions:

  • Are your medical personnel full-time employees?
  • How many medical team members will be on the flight?
  • What are their licenses and certifications?
  • Are they flight-experienced?

Every member of the Jet Rescue medical crew is a full-time employee with years of experience in emergency medicine. Our  medical crews undergo an extensive orientation and training process including flight Physiology and aviation safety prior to flying with patients. Additionally, all medical personnel participate in 100 hours of didactic and clinical education each year, including training on the Laerdal Sim man.

Both a critical care flight nurse and paramedic accompany the patient throughout the entire transfer. Together, these highly-competent, compassionate teams can handle virtually any incident that might occur during a transport. And they truly care about their patients; many of them keep in touch with patients and families long after the medical flight.

These are  few of the criteria you should expect from a trustworthy air ambulance transportation provider. If you should have any questions at all about air ambulance transfers, call us 24/7  at 877.704.8396
